To some, a loonie in real terms have monetary value. So you can probably pick up a chocolate bar or something from the vending machines on campus. Too bad, they raised prices on vending machines to $1.25 . That's besides the fact though that a loonie has emotional value. Perhaps a call to a loved one can make all the difference in the world.
So today, after my night class I was walking around campus thinking of somthing to do, knowing fully well that I have barely touched any of my study material for Stat 371 and CO 350 coming wednesday and thursday respectively. I walked Steph to the Waterloo plaza for a bite and then headed home. Along the way, I bumped into this guy with a medium build. He looked like a student but I couldn't tell because of his messed up hairstyle. He called to me and asked me if I had any spare change. For a second, I wasn't reluctant to give money to someone I don't know for nothing. But then, I dipped into my wallet looking for change and pulled out a dollar. At first, I was thinking of giving him a quarter, but then thought for another second that it wasn't going to be worth the trouble. He was around 10 ft away from me at the time and I threw him the loonie. The guy sorta gave me an explaination but I didn't really hear it. I was carrying a lot of cash and credit cards at the time and thought that a dollar seemed reasonable to get him out of my sight.
I remembered that last time I head about a similar situation was last week, when one of the workers at my dad's company got beaten up and was taken to the hospital because he ran when he was asked for a cigarette.
