Canada Day is the day to feel proud of our culture and heritage. Canada is among one of the most multicultural nations in the world and delivers on its promise to raise the standards of living. In the past, Canada Day had been celebrated at a nearby park, wonderland, CNE or just at a relative's house. However, this year is one that will truely be remembered.
I remember that during the planning stages of the event, there were just so many uncertainties to deal with, especially being able to determine who was definitely coming and who wasn't. Other factors such as whether it was going to rain determined the success of the event. I prayed for good weather the night before and got just that. Thank God. The weather forecast still said there was a 40% chance of rain. I guess God was on our side.
That morning, I had to help my parents deliver goods to our customers, by the time I had finished, I was very tired, considering I had only slept for 3.5 hours that night. Everyone met in front of our church before heading off, from there, we discussed the seating arrangement and the route. It was a little hard trying to get together but we all found one another in the end. The arrival time was around 4pm. We picked a spot along the crest of the sandy beach and laid out our ration of food on the blankets. Some of us decided to get a little tan and some actually went swimming in the lake. We spent a few hours there, playing beach volleyball, soccer, dodgeball and games which allowed us to get to know one another so much more. By 7pm, some of us were starved, and so we packed up and went to Beach 2, where we were allowed to BBQ. One of the fun things is to be able to get the coal oven going and that job was left for one of my friends and I. I remember pouring lots of ignition fluid on the charchol, and setting fire to it burst up in flames. That was cool but we had to try a couple of times to finally keep the charchol heated for it to become self sustainable. We had people bring in food for potluck and along with the BBQ, provided adequately for everyone. I was happy to see so many smiling faces and so many people enjoying themselves. Half past 9, we had a mini sharing session whereby everyone talked about their program of study and interests. The setting was perfect with the sun set completely and a glowing blue horizon. Fireworks followed shorly after along the beach. Happy Birthday Canada !
